该部电影由八一电影制片厂导演王千和著名剧作家徐宝琦共同创作，是一部以叶炎煌烈士生平事迹为题材，以与妻子廖小花凄美的爱情故事为主线，再现了那段血色苍茫的峥嵘岁月。厦门大学艺术系女学生苏秀影与被追捕的青年相遇，助他逃走，并拣到了青年匆忙之中掉落的怀表，而这个青年便是他一直崇拜的叶松岩，从此对他无法忘怀。她想尽办法寻找叶松岩，终于找到了叶家叶丽春堂，两颗年轻的心紧紧贴到了一起。412事变突然爆发，共产党人遭到大抓捕，厦门的革命活动被迫转下地下，叶松岩接受组织安排离开厦门，回到他的家乡大田开展革命工作。叶松岩走后，苏秀影身怀有孕，叶家却不认她与孩子，又被特务监视，孤立无援的情况下，把孩子生在了路上。叶松岩终于回到厦门，在琴声的引导下，两个人终于久别重逢，却想不到，这也是他们最后的诀别……
